Prototype Valveless Pulse Jet from Pipes - Test
This was a prototype of a Pulse Jet Engine I built several years ago, before I had studied the gas dynamics of its combustion cycle. It didn't produce any significant thrust, but was simple to make and managed to sustain resonant combustion for short periods.
In a properly designed pulse jet, the length and diameter of each inlet/outlet pipe must be balanced for sustained operation, which in this case I did simply through trial and error rather than calculating it separately. In the end I believe the primary issue was an improper air/fuel ratio, since I could stop the engine by simply injecting compressed air into the inlet nearest the fuel injector.
This project involved combustion of fuel and high temperatures - the combustion chamber got hot enough to boil water I poured on to cool it! If you choose to repeat this project do so carefully and at your own risk. I am not responsible for any injuries you may incur as a result of this video.
