PS1 - Rascal - 97-11-13 Prototype Gameplay and Showcase
A showcase of the recently leaked prototype of one of the PlayStation's most reviled platformers of all time, built on November 13, 1997, just 4 months before the game came out.
As you can see, this is basically an earlier version of the Rascal demo released both on stand-alone discs in the US and Europe, and on the European OPM demo discs, except with some differences:
- No stomping.
- HUD cannot be hidden.
- It lacks the often-overlooked and forgotten Brake and walk button (which is of course R1).
- No camera controls, making the game more harder than it already is.
- Your Bubble Gun does not activate the red homing bubbles once filled up to 100%.
- The bubbles you fire are white instead of gold, even in their weak states (which were blue in the later build) when you run out of the regular bubbles.
- Sound effects of items you collect have been swapped around.
- The Psygnosis logo in the copyright screen is the Amiga-Era pre-mid-1996 one, before it was then changed to the then-current logo seen shortly afterwards.
- The Rascal logo during gameplay and rolling demos is the same one found on the title screen.
- Human enemies do not make grunt sounds when you shoot at them.
- Callum does not make a sound when he jumps.
- No footstep sounds.
- No sound effects when you walk into the bubble to exit the level.
- It uses Comic Sans as the in-game text font.
- No Map screen.
Otherwise, it contains basically everything that was featured in the aforementioned playable demo on those aforementioned discs. From the level playable in this demo, which is the Aztec Temple at Chichimeca (Aztec Past) BTW, the rolling demos set in Atlantis (Past), the playable level and the Sunken Wreck, to even the title screen and end-demo screens, and the game over screen (I'll show it to you by losing all lives on purpose after playing through the level in its entirety).
Protoype played using RetroArch via the PCSX-ReArmed core and recorded using its in-app game recorder.
