Playing Arc System Works' Japanese-region game "Sengoku Basara X (Cross)" on a PS2, just going through all the options and 1P game modes:

Sengoku Basara is a Capcom series, and they got Arc to make a fighting game for it. It was more fun than I had remembered it! Sort of a less manic, less aliased Guilty Gear X--until you and your opponent call in your assistants, and then you get all kinds of assist attacks and combos going. The trick is to wait to call the assistant until their meter has powered up to 100, at which point, once they ride in after a short delay, they're more powerful and combo-riffic. I kept screwing it up and hitting the assist button early during my indiscriminate mashing. ; ) With a level 100 assistant, even I could mash out some pretty neat extended combos! : o

The game does have some audio balance problems--certain event sound effects are much louder than the rest! And the intro is quieter.
