The M4A1 has a good spray but takes skill to be very deadly consistently.

One of the tricks to Socom 2 was knowing how much you can push a weapon when firing at range. Meaning with some weapons you could get away with 6-8 shot bursts, others only 3 shot burst in an attempt to remain lined up with your target. Full auto would do the trick to but less likely to get a kill. This game Socom 2 did weapon handling very well. Other games could of had you holding a brick or broom stick that never moved much like many pc game machine guns and bang bang bullets fly out of it with little user feedback of how to handle the weapon. (talking about the difference in game design between using a mouse versus a dual shock controller) In Socom the recoil and fire pattern added to the skill needed to play. Meaning often times simply being the first to see and fire didn't always mean you got the kill. A shot (headshot) or 2 would drop another player but at times you got into a brief gun battle. The weapons felt unique and often times dictated how you would be playing or at least made you feel like you had to fire the gun a certain way instead of just looking for other players and shooting at them. Tracers played a big role in the guns success and players understanding of how the guns wanted to be fired. This is Socom 2, Socom 3 changed all weapons over to the same line tracers that 90% of the time didn't fly straight, and generally gave zero in the way of feedback it was all spray and pray to some extent, here the tracers are ball like and come in different sizes and diameters. Long or short, skinny and fat. Hard to tell but it is true. One complaint of Socom 3 is that the weapons don't fire "true" and the inclusion of silencers for many weapons (which everybody used) made the tracer issue of less importance. This Socom was on to something great and that is why it is thought of as a great game when it came to weapons, maps, and servers among other things.

The M14 has a larger round (and tracer) and a wider spray pattern. The key to success with it is unloading in close combat or skill in bursting it longer range, 3 shots, 3 shots, etc... or a lucky spray and pray full auto burst, but the bullet pattern is so wide and recoil so bad it takes skill to be consistent.

The HK5SD is a small silenced gun with small fast firing bullets (and tracers when not silenced), and it is very accurate. Success is in being accurate with multiple shots, mostly a head shot hunting gun. Being silenced means it produces no tracers or muzzle flash and little sound heard by enemy unless very close or bullets hitting nearby.

If you never played Socom 2 you missed out on the handguns which would be the easiest way of understanding the weapons use and importance of this game from a new comer hands on perspective. SP10 v MK23 v the small black silenced gun, the Mk would be most like every other games handguns almost, the SP10 was the best handgun I ever used and the small silenced hadngun had zero recoil but required a good deal of precision aiming and firing. Firing the 3 in a shoot out and you will undestand the guns and methods of Socom. Also had a Desert Eagle and automatic Glock for terrorists. So overall a complete gunning experience. Shotguns sucked big time and the game had a few other issues like invisible mines and the glitchers that destroyed all it was. Still up and running online to this day but totally unplayable because of glitchers though it could of still been a classic game played to this day like tetris if not for the cheaters.

R.I.P. Socom
and any clone Socom (Socom 2 HD remake) that doesn't handle weapons the way this game did will never be as succesful in my opinion. Took me many many games to realize it was the guns to a very very large extent that made this game good. I still jump in online frost fire respawn just to run through the guns until a glitcher comes along and shoots very player on both teams with an automatic sniper rifle while dropping hundreds of grenades every where he/she sets foot. RIP

I did a Socom 2 vs Socom 3 tracer video also. None of these are perfect but you can see what I am going for.
