(PS3 60fps) The King of Fighters XII - menus, modes & gameplay 11/24/16
After four years of no new KOF, there was finally...The King of Fighters XII! High-res 2D! Completely redone, gigantic sprites! And not much else--either in the way of gameplay modes or AI. For instance, in this video I try to show everything you can play through single player on PS3 (there used to be an attack-spamming bot you could fight online, for years and years, but now even that is gone : P), but even on the highest difficulty setting, and me pretty much having no clue what I'm doing, I can more or less mash my way through a 3-person CPU team with just one character without even really trying--the AI just skips back and forth, punching the air, and getting hit by whatever you feel like throwing at them. So I guess the only thing approaching a challenge (aside from trying to clear Time Attack with the shortest time, which doesn't seem interesting to me at all) is to see if you can get through all five or six randomish matches in the story mode stand-in--"Time Attack"--without losing a single fighter. And that probably isn't too hard if you know how to play at least one character semi decently (I'm not quite there yet : PP).
The game also has some pretty loopy fighting systems, funky midair collision, and a number of bugs--for instance, you'll see (and hear) here that when I tried turning the two in-game volume settings--Sound Effects and Music--down to a decent level, character dialog, which does *not* have its own volume setting, got much, much quieter, to the point where it was nearly inaudible; maybe both Sound Effect and Music volume lowering lower dialog, so it got *twice* as quiet?
Anyway, I guess this is pretty much the only outright awful game in the main KOF series, which is too bad because I really do like how gigantic the sprites are (and how the gameplay mostly seemed less focused on supers and long combos); I was really disappointed when they shrunk them down in KOF XIII--yeah they look less pixelated that way, but just so much less dramatic. If only SNK had rendered them at a proper 720p in the first place, instead of ~480p or whatever...but then, we could go on and on with the things that went wrong with XII, couldn't we? At least it makes for some conversation, I suppose! : P
