A concept interface, mocked up in the PS4 Theme Software SDK. created for demonstration purposes only.

Update: This is running in the PS4 theme software, and does run on a console. The standard UI is presently hidden, and the 'mock' UI is a 3D element.

We are not platform engineers, so this is all theoretical:

As this (and the PS4 dashboard) runs at 60hz natively, I believe that reprojection could be used to generate a 120hz image suitable and comfortable for VR.

Movement in the video is done via mouse input, as the actual PS4 dashboard does not parse input from the HMD. this, too, could be conceivably possible.

We theorize that a realistic implementation would be that of a 2D menu overlay of the actual PS4 tiles, akin to cinematic mode, floating in front of the user, while all dynamic elements would exist in the 3D space around it.

This presents other challenges however: upon launching an app, to free necessary resources the dynamic theme process would likely have to be stopped entirely, rather than simply suspended in memory as in the current implementation. Otherwise, more GPU time and memory would need to be allocated to the theme software, which is likely not possible.

We surmise A static image background would probably need to take its place upon suspending a PS4 game or app briefly, and the actual VR dashboard would only re-execute upon shut-down of the game or app process.
