I think the cutscenes wouldn't be so bothersome if they weren't mostly triggered by moving into a space. Like, maybe let me look around the room and trigger the scenes with a talk/inspect action when I'm ready? Sure, maybe I'd miss some lore about a wall decoration, but I think that's a sacrifice I'd be willing to make to feel more in control.
