Check out part 5 of my Indie playthrough featuring the game Pumpkin Jack! This game released on the Xbox One & Xbox Series family of consoles on October 22nd, 2020. It was developed by Nicolas Meyssonnier & published by Headup.

In this video, Pumpkin Jack follows the Wizard's trail into the heart of a creepy and vile swamp.

Pumpkin Jack is a 3D, action, arcade-platformer where the player controls Jack, the Mythical Pumpkin Lord who is sent on a mission to stop a powerful wizard within the Arc En Ciel Kingdom. The Kingdom was going through a time of great prosperity and peace, which piqued the interest of the Devil himself. This irritated the Devil so much that he decided to unleash a deadly curse called the Curse of the Eternal Night on the Arc En Ciel Kingdom. This spell caused the Kingdom to go without seeing daytime and it also spawned an army of mindless, soulless, heartless monsters all across the kingdom's lands. Given the damage that these monsters caused all throughout the land the King decided to intervene and called on the powerful Wizard to put a stop to these monsters and the curse itself. This act only infuriated the Devil even more, and so, he decided to call upon Stingy Jack (whose spirit he infused into a pumpkin) to travel to the Kingdom and put a stop to the Wizard and his plan to bring peace back to the land.

In terms of gameplay, this game is actually a lot of fun as the level design is very well done, the controls are pretty tight and responsive, the Halloween vibe and theme on display is awesome (especially for this time of the year) and the story is actually fairly unique (not many games tend focus on the player embodying an evil character) and well written. The graphics are also perfectly eerie and I think the developer did an amazing job at balancing the creepy vibe of the game while also keeping it lighthearted and implementing a fantasy element to it. It's also very interesting that, given the game's dark nature and emphasis, this game's world is actually fairly vibrant and colorful. The player controls Jack from a 3rd person perspective and has to jump/fight his way through a series of 6 differently themed levels: The Fields, The Haunted/Ancient Mines, The Cursed Swamp, Skele-Town, The Spooky Cemetery and The North. The game includes many different kinds of platforming sections and constantly changes things up by either adding vehicle sections to the game (which includes slightly different mechanics to tackle) or puzzle sections where Jack's head is taken off his body and used to solve puzzles to open up new paths. The game also puts a fairly strong emphasis on combat and gives the player different kinds of enemies to defeat along with a boss fight at the end of each level which rewards a new weapon for Jack to utilize in his quest to stop the Wizard. I truly feel that the game strikes a very nice balance between the platforming/puzzle sections with the combat sections which helps keeps things from getting stale and boring.

As for the achievements: this game includes a total of 33 achievements for a total of 1000 GS. Most of the achievements are story related while the rest are related to collectibles or purchasing all of Jack's outfits. The game includes 2 kinds of collectibles: crow skulls and gramophones (there are 20 skulls per level and 1 gramophone per level). This is definitely not a very hard completion since most of the achievements will be unlocked just by playing the game. The collectibles are also, for the most part, easy to find and the best part is that the game includes a level/chapter select so it's very easy to go back and collect any that you may have missed during your playthrough.
