Aluminum trichloride is commonly used in chemical synthesis. It's anhydrous, meaning that it's completely dry and it's also really reactive. It even reacts with moisture in the air and it lets off acidic HCl gas. It can be destroyed much faster, and let off a lot more gas, if I just dump it into some water.
