Being mostly a Nintendo 64 player, I didn't own many PC games, but Quake 2 was one of the first games I bought! Interestingly I never beat Quake 2 back in the day; I mostly would just listen to the soundtrack as a music CD. Then the digital versions of Quake 2 often lacked the soundtrack, and I got used to playing Quake 2 without its soundtrack. Then first Quake 2 I beat eventually would be the N64 version which had dark ambient music. So when the Quake 2 Remaster came out, it was unusual for me hearing the metal soundtrack in game. I do really like its soundtrack but I also find it drowns out the ambient sounds of the cyborg hellscape. So I replaced it with some of my music found on Bandcamp. I have also applied the Bandither shader to reduce the color output to the same range as the PS1 release of Quake. I find it nicely adds some grit to the textures.
