Id's premier shooter.

Thanks to The N64's added filtering and coloured lighting effects Quake 64 resembles that of GLQuake rather than the original 1996 PC edition or the Saturn port released the following year. However it lacks alot of the Geometry found in those versions. A number of levels have been cut from this version too, including the hub world. It lacked the soundtrack by Trent Reznor furthermore, replaced by ambient noise instead.

But the biggest problem for Quake on Nintendo 64 is just how poorly it had aged and made obsolete. By 1998 the N64 had Turok and Goldeneye - both of which had reshaped the FPS genre. It also had Duke Nukem 64, Doom 64 and Hexen as well. Plus, without the online play, Quake kind of looked a joke with only two player splitscreen multiplayer and an average single-player campaign to boot. This isn't even taking into account the awkward controls Midway used rather than Goldeneye or Turok control layout.

Despite this, the game is still reasonably solid and not a bad effort. Quake on Nintendo 64 is one hell of a challenge too and not for the faint hearted, much to the delight of any id fan. Basically, if you've exhausted the best of the shooter library on Nintendo 64 then give this one a shot, just don't expect a whole lot from it.
