For Quanta, we wanted to bring back functionalities that were removed from the original Portal due to hardware limitations. The portals in Quanta use a reimplemented functionality that allows for light to be shown through the portals. By sampling the light outside of each portal, the game finds whichever side is darker and creates a flashlight just outside of the portal that illuminates the world, similar to how portals will play sounds through one another.
