There have been many iterations of Tetris over the years, including the recently ported Tetris Effect in VR. QubeFall is looking to bring Tetris to Virtual Reality in three dimensions.
You are placed in the centre of a visually realistic setting and a floating square grid in front of you. Familiar block shapes fall from the sky in front of you which you manipulate, rotating in all directions, currently using the controllers, however with enough backing the developers are hoping to introduce hand tracking. Much like regular Tetris as a block falls you do your best to fill in the grid, where needed overlapping other sets of blocks, fill a complete grid and a level clears, fail and the height of the blocks continues to rise until it is game over.
To the right of you is a tube that gradually will cubes, for each cleared layer you are presented with a cube, fill it and you can pull the handle at any time and this will clear the majority, if not all of your play space, timing is everything and should really be used at times of panic.
The soundtrack the accompanies the game is currently a single chilled out track by CloudNone and officially licensed from MonsterCat music, with plans to add more tracks in the future.
The gameplay as with the original is very simple and starts really chilled, the tracking works perfectly, but as you progress the game speeds up and panic sets in, causing errors, this is were it is handy to have a filled tube to quickly clear the play space and start again.
I can't wait to try with hand tracking in the future as this is the perfect game format to implement it in.
The game is currently available as Donationware through SideQuest/Itch.io.
