Mini Motor Racer X - Oculus Quest
Mini Motor Racing X
The Binary Mill
Oculus Quest
This is a racer the caters for many racers, has so many game modes, view points that someone will find their favourite. The racing is competitive either when racing the AI.
The main core of the game is a campaign mode that takes you through beginner to hard difficulties, the tracks are well designed, feel a little like Mario Kart in that you have different locations, but with more realism.
You can also race like a Kart game called 'X' with weapons, which has a much more arcade feel to it. Then there is micro racing, which are on the same circuits, but with reduced sized vehicles, in both campaign mode and karting. I have left Bumper ball to the last to mention, but this is incredibly fun and addictive whether you play against the AI or online players, this is basically Rocket League in VR and works superbly.
The design and view of the circuits are highly detailed, a lot of the time they feel a little short and are very windy which leads to some tight racing and at times you will be bumped into a barrier just as you are turning in. The locations range from countryside, safari, Aztec, the Monaco-esque Cliff circuit, docklands etc, all have animations be it animals or vehicles in the surrounding locations. Like any great racer, the circuits are also raced backwards, which cleverly doubles the circuit numbers. On each circuit you will find additional boosts and money.
Viewpoints range from a couple of in car views, a few just behind and above, then more like an RC raver where you can look down and over the whole circuit. This is available for all the game modes, so you will find one that suits your VR legs or racing style. The cars are character cartoon versions of real cars and suit the game style perfectly. As you complete racers you will gain money to buy upgrades, plus opening additional visual items to allow you to customise yourself of car, such as helmets, gloves and steering wheels.
There are a couple of control systems available to you, one is to use the controllers as per normal, using triggers for accelerate or brake, analogue stick for steering and buttons for boosting or firing weapons in 'X' racing. My favourite way to race is with the steering wheel, which when partnered with the in car views drives and handles brilliantly, you use the grip buttons to hold the wheel whilst moving the two controllers like you are turning a wheel, triggers and are maintained as accelerator, brake boost and weapons. Believe me, once you have raced a couple of times like this you will be using nothing else.
The multi player at my time of playing was a little sparse although I was able to play a number of games against another player and didn't witness any lag or slowdown, especially important in Bumper Ball.
This game deserves to be a massive hit on the Quest, especially in multiplayer, it is easy to join other online games, simply select multi player and the game searches for an online match whilst you carry on racing, then automatically ends your race and joins the match, so no need to sit around waiting.
A fun racer, well implemented, competitive and hours of fun in multiplayer, get a few friends together and play bumper ball all night, there isn't a many better games to play online.
