The original IREM horizontal shooter, R-Type from the arcade. I would think that arcade operators loved this game, as the difficulty is quite high, so making good progress would require feeding the machine plenty of quarters (or whatever your local currency was at the time).

Aside from the difficulty, the art, sound, music, and level design are nicely done. Also, the variety in the game is extremely well done. A nice weapon upgrade system is the cherry on the top of the design.

If you have the patience to deal with the difficulty, R-Type is an excellent game to invest play time in.
