-R-Type Leo est un shmup arcade 2D à défilement latéral, le quatrième jeu (bien que non considéré comme un opus principal) de la série R-Type. Plutôt que de se concentrer sur le combat contre l'Empire Bydo, l'histoire décrit comment un bio-ordinateur dysfonctionne et prend le contrôle d'une planète artificielle construite par l'homme. Le joueur tente de l'arrêter avec son vaisseau spatial. Par rapport aux précédents opus, quelques modifications ont été apportées aux systèmes d'armes. La Force et le Canon à Ondes ont été supprimés, remplacés par des Bit Devices, comparables à la TOZ de Gaiares. Leur direction de tir dépend du mouvement du vaisseau lui-même. Ils peuvent également être détachés pour infliger des dégâts de collision directs aux ennemis. R-Type Leo est également le premier jeu de la série à proposer un mode coopératif à deux joueurs.

-Overview
-R-Type Leo is an arcade 2D side-scrolling shmup, the fourth game (although not considered a main entry) in the R-Type series. Rather than the fight against the Bydo Empire, the story background describes how a bio-computer malfunctions and takes control of an artificial planet that was built by mankind. The player tries to stop it with his spaceship. Compared to earlier installments, some changes have been made regarding the weapon systems. The Force and the Wave Cannon are removed, instead, Bit Devices are introduced that are comparable to the TOZ in Gaiares. Their firing direction depends on the movement of the ship itself. They can also be detached for direct collision damage to enemies. R-Type Leo is also the first game in the series with two players co-op.
