R-Type was a commercial success way back in 1987 and celebrated by critics for its graphics and addictive gameplay, but was criticized for its difficulty. Infact it's hard as nails. I guess gamers were made of sterner stuff back in those days.

It is commonly cited as one of the best shoot 'em up video games, and one of the greatest video games of all time. Its success inspired several sequel and spinoff games, and home ports including our 8-bit Master System.

The Master System version may not be the near arcade perfect game but it imore enjoyable. It plays a little easier and it's got a Master System ONLY extra level!

For me the game is faithful to its arcade counterpart, but for what it loses in the presentation, it more than makes up for with its increased 'fun factor'.

The slightly easier and less frustrating play, the novelty of the extra level, and the fact that it's based on an excellent arcade game to begin with make the Master System R-Type a winner. It may well be the best 8-bit shooter out there. Period.
