This begins the controversial (And I don't really like it) The Last Of Us Part II.

So here's the first part of Neil Druckmann's terribly written, poorly paced LBGTQ Friendly Lesbian Powertrip Fantasy. Druck says he asks people for "something better"

ok. top of my head?

Joel Sacrifices himself for Ellie in an emotional moment
Not beaten like a dog. maybe ellie screws up or gets caught and he dies to save her. he isn't beaten like a dog in an un-heroic moment.

Joel disappears mysteriously. not killed, just missing.
Ellie spends the game trying to track him down unravelling a bigger conspiracy. Mystery without character assassination.

Joel is mortally wounded but survives "broken"
Role Reversal, Ellie must now protect him. high emotional weight without lazy shock value.

Joel becomes a philosophical enemy
Elie can't morally accept the lengths Joel is going to. Maybe he's too violent. Conflict arises naturally but they both live and the relationship becomes strained and tragic... not cheapened by a baseball bat.

Joel steps aside.
He's too broken by what he did... killing the fireflies, so he exiles himself feeling unworthy after ellie distances herself. She has to find herself without him.

The Truth slips out
Joel's brother is overheard repeating what Joel did to save Ellie. She becomes angry and runs away. Joel takes after her, on her trail. The two reunite eventually and work together despite Ellie still being angry and eventually reconcile.

Justice
Maybe the fireflies integrate with the town of Jackson into a new society and put Joel on trial. Add a realm of "political doctrine" to his refusal to share a potential cure.

Ya see, Druckster.... it was shock for shock's sake. Not earned, not respected. It underminded TLOU part 1, Alienated players, and tried desperately to force sympathy for Abby.. which it failed at, As you did everything you could to make her as unlikeable as possible in the first place.

ya see.. Killing Joel wasn't the problem, It's HOW YOU DID IT. Cheap, fast, ugly, and disrespectful. There's dozens of smarter, better, and richer narrative options.
