Yeah, it turns out the water source deep underground really was lava, one of the colonists got boiled because I was pumping it into the irrigation system i'd set up, oops.
I'd love to set up a lava moat for the monkeys but I can't think of a way to keep my people from swimming through it :)
Oh well i'll have to go back a few minutes in the save games and not complete the pipe. Sad really, it looked great.
