"Rango" is a 2011 animated comedy/adventure movie featuring Johnny Depp as the voice of Rango, a chameleon who wanders the desert until he happens on a small town in need of a hero. "Rango," which opens in U.S. theaters nationwide on March 4, 2011, is co-written and directed by Gore Verbinski. The movie also features the voices of Abigail Breslin, Isla Fisher, Bill Nighy and Timothy Olyphant.

Reviews for "Rango" began coming out several days before the film's release.  Overall, reviews were generally favorable.  On March 3, 2011, Rango garnered a 79 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes' "Tomatometer."  The film scored a slightly lower 71 out of a possible 100 on Metacritic.com.

Critics who offered favorable reviews of "Rango" gave high praise to the movie's visuals.  Among them: Roger Ebert of the "Chicago Sun-Times" who calls "Rango" "some kind of miracle: An animated comedy for smart moviegoers" that is "wonderfully made, great to look at, wickedly satirical and...filmed in glorious 2-D."  Ebert gives "Rango" a perfect four out of four stars.

Todd McCarthy of "The Hollywood Reporter" writes that the "most exceptional" part of "Rango" is it's "visual style, which makes even the best animated 3D look like a poor cousin."

Critic Peter Debruge of Variety says that "it's saying something that (Johnny Depp's) turn as the worlds most conspicuous chameleon" in the movie "is so full-bodied, you forget the actor and focus on the character."

The handful of critics who offered average or less-than-favorable reviews of "Rango" include Nick Shager of the "Village Voice," who calls the movie's plot "overstuffed," writing that "laughs are scarce."

Overall though, again, most major critics seemed to agree that "Rango" is an unusual, fun film, including Jake Coyle of the Associated Press who suggests that "Perhaps a new classification has been born: the 'SpaghettiOs Western.'"
