The things I did differently to the guide were… (perform at your own risk!)
At 8.22
in terminal input
sudo cp /boot/cmdline.txt /boot/cmdline.txt.bak
Then shut down your Pi
unplug the SSD and reboot with your SD card inserted
open a terminal and type
sudo nano /boot/cmdline.txt
go back to the try at home guide carry on from 8.36

I had changed the boot command line on the ssd previously as per the video. Now both my SSD and the SD card have changed command lines. I don’t know if you need to do it on the SSD at all.
If you SSD shows up as a removable drive on your desktop it hasn’t worked.
