Reasons for PhD abroad

1I give some advice (admittedly physics-specific) for Canadian undergraduates and masters students to protest NSERC by going abroad for graduate school if it proves necessary, as well as some measure of justification for my choice of a destination.
My view on in-field prestige vs. effectiveness as a political move is paradoxical at best, since even though going to a more prestigious school will give your move more weight (as done by a near-PGS M/D student), it is easier to hide the political aspect of your attendance than if you go to a lower-profile school
