Recovering Windows/Linux Installation on MAC
11As a Mac user who have migrated to Linux I've been always puzzled of how complicated the boot process on Mac could been when it comes to using alternative operating systems such as Linux (or even Windows at times).
One of such solutions has been installing the rEFInd boot manager. I have a video about the installation process here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5G9tr1JS_Y
But sometimes even installing the rEFInd doesn't help when it comes to rescuing the bootloader of your Linux installation. In such scenarios we need to be more creative and use specific tools.
My favorite utility/tool for this process is antiX. The process itself looks like this for the most part:
1. Download and install antiX: https://antixlinux.com/download/
- Format your flash drive using Disk Utility on Mac (or any other utility)
- Install the downloaded ISO using the UNetbootin utility
2. Restart your computer with a flash drive plugged in and boot into the antiX menu (You can either boot into antiX menu using rEFInd or by pressing the "Option" key during the boot)
3. Select "Boot Rescue Menu" when booted into antiX
4. Select "Find GRUB menus" on the next screen
5. Return back to the menu
6. Select necessary partition with Linux
Can you use this tool to boot other operating systems such as Windows? Yes, sure. Go through the "Boot rescue menu" options and find the one matching your operating systems. It should work to boot the necessary OS.
