Red Dead Redemption 2 is a Western-themed action-adventure video game developed and published by Rockstar Games. The game is a prequel to the 2010 game Red Dead Redemption, and the third entry in the Red Dead series. Set in 1899, it follows the story of outlaw Arthur Morgan, a member of the Dutch Van der Linde gang.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a Western-themed action-adventure game set in an open world environment. It is played from either a third or first-person perspective and the player controls Arthur Morgan, an outlaw and a member of the Van der Linde gang. The game features both single-player and online multiplayer components.

The player takes on the role of Arthur Morgan, a lieutenant in the Van der Linde gang. Among the returning characters are John Marston, the protagonist from the previous game; antagonists Dutch Van der Linde, Bill Williamson and Javier Escuella, who, along with Marston, are Morgan's allies; and Abigail, Marston's partner.

After a botched robbery, the Van der Linde gang are on the run from Pinkerton Detective Agency. Caught in a severe blizzard, they seek shelter in the abandoned mining town of Colter. While scouting the area, Dutch confides in Arthur Morgan that their losses are heavier than the gang realizes. When they stumble onto a plot by the O'Driscoll gang to rob a nearby train, Dutch decides to thwart the robbery to prevent the Pinkertons from investigating the area. Arthur privately doubts the wisdom of Dutch's decision, believing his judgement is being clouded by his hatred of Colm O'Driscoll, the O'Driscoll gang's leader.
