Red Earth: Can We CONQUOR this Capcom Legend?
In the 1996 Capcom arcade classic, Red Earth (known as Warzard in Japan), players dive into a fantastical realm where heroes battle monstrous foes in a quest for survival. This unique 2D fighting game, set in a world frozen in medieval myth and magic, stood out as Capcom's first title on the advanced CP System III hardware—the same powerhouse that would later fuel the legendary Street Fighter III. Red Earth brought an innovative twist to fighting games, blending RPG elements with classic one-on-one battles and earned its spot in the Capcom Fighting Collection in June 2022.

In Red Earth, players can jump into Quest Mode, where they select from four unique heroes and follow their personal storylines across eight intense, single-player battles. Each victory rewards players with experience points to strengthen their character’s attack and defense, unlocking new abilities as they progress. The thrill of upgrading moves adds a layer of strategy that keeps the action fresh and exciting. For those who crave head-to-head combat, Versus Mode offers two-player fights where both players can choose any hero, even selecting the same character for a mirror match showdown.
The gameplay mechanics in Red Earth bring several distinctive features to the table. Each battle in Quest Mode pits players against massive, intimidating bosses with health bars that stretch across the screen, offering a true test of endurance and skill. Throughout combat, players can smash treasure chests and collect coins, giving the game a treasure-hunting feel akin to Capcom’s Dungeons & Dragons series. Coins translate to experience points, while the treasure chests reveal items like orbs for special moves and food to replenish health, creating a mix of fighting and action RPG elements that set it apart from other fighters.
Red Earth is also one of the few Capcom games to feature fatalities, adding a level of visceral excitement. Defeating an opponent can result in jaw-dropping finishes, with moves that split enemies in half, rupture arteries, and even remove limbs. Multiple endings await players depending on the decisions made, continues used, and unique ways of defeating enemies, allowing each playthrough to offer fresh twists.
Red Earth takes place on an alternate version of Earth, a world locked in a mythological 14th-century state with no Renaissance or technological advances. The land has been overrun by monsters under the command of the dark wizard Scion, who sends his monstrous servants to seize power. Four heroes rise to confront these creatures:
Leo: Once the king of Savalia, Leo is cursed into a lion-man hybrid form when dark forces attack his kingdom. Armed with strength and pride, Leo battles through his enemies to reclaim his homeland from the monstrous Hauzer.
Kenji: The head of the Ramon family and elite ninja leader of Zipang, Kenji serves his Shogun loyally but secretly harbors doubts. When mysterious blackships invade, Kenji sets out to investigate, suspecting betrayal within his own ranks.
Tessa: A magic-wielding sorcerologist, Tessa is dedicated to studying the scientific aspects of magic. From her home in Icelarn, she investigates the unnatural thunderstorms plaguing her region, using her keen insight to distinguish between friend and foe.
Mai-Ling: A skilled martial artist from Gora, Mai-Ling returns from a tournament only to find her village in ruins. Determined to seek justice, she confronts Lavia, the monstrous harpy responsible for the destruction, and sets out to uncover the mystery behind the attacks.
But heroes are nothing without worthy adversaries. Red Earth brings a host of terrifying bosses, each with unique abilities and backstories.
With its high-stakes battles, mystical storylines, and RPG-inspired mechanics, Red Earth stands out as an iconic part of Capcom's arcade history. Now part of the Capcom Fighting Collection, this once-arcade-exclusive adventure is available to a new generation on consoles and PC, where players can dive into its unique blend of action, fantasy, and strategy. Prepare for brutal fights, unlock hidden endings, and explore the world of Red Earth like never before.
