Established in 1942 C.E in response to the defensive, counter-offensive, anti-vehicular, and urban combat experiences and needs in battlefields such as Stalingrad, Leningrad, and Kursk amongst others; Soviet Assault-Engineers were a sub-type of Soviet combat engineer (Popularly referred to as 'Sappers') within the Workers' And Peasants' Red Army during the Second World War.

Uniquely & popularly identified for their usage of steel segmented breast plate armor (SN-38, SN-40, & SN-42 models respectively) along with automatic weapons such as the PPSH-41 & PPS-42, Assault-Engineer 'Sappers' were specialized not only in the construction of field fortifications as well as the laying and clearing of mines, but additionally in engaging Nazi German & other fascist forces' armor as well as engaging them within urban areas, where structures had to be brutally secured in room-to-room firefights or be outright demolished.

Assault-Engineer Sappers were fielded with automatic small arms, steel body armor for protection against explosive fragmentation and small caliber weaponry (To an extent), varying types of explosive munitions for the destruction of enemy vehicles & structures, specialized weaponry such as anti-tank rifles and flamethrowers, and were motorized via trucks. Their contributions towards the Allied cause of the ultimate defeat and unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany plus its fascist co-belligerents and puppets have been immortalized within popular media and the historical record ever since through film, photographs, and video games alike.
