Torpedo chasing down a Permit-class SSN... It tries a noisemaker... Torpedo ignores noisemaker... Boom!

(Several days earlier...)

07-OCT-1984 1400L North of Murmansk

We just left Murmansk in our Victor II, fully loaded, for our 16th war patrol.
Our priority mission from GLAVCOM was to stop a NATO submarine replenishment convoy.

01:32 Convoy Intercepted

08-OCT-1984 1800L Norwegian Sea, south of Jan Mayen

We dodged a NATO subsurface contact, and intercepted the convoy. Sonar detected a Perry frigate leading an Oiler. We are in their path. We turned toward them to present minimum profile.

05:05 Surprise Interlope

We launched a TEST-71 to the west, hoping to dogleg it toward the approaching Perry only 7 km away to our northwest, when suddenly an unfamiliar sonar rang out, and a new contact appeared... It's close!

It turned out to be an Oberon sub hiding near the Perry, and our torpedo flushed it out. We turned the torpedo toward Oberon, as both Perry and Oiler turned away. Oberon replied with a Tigerfish. We dodged in the wrong direction and we were hit after several evasive attempts, damaging our propulsion, limiting us to 10kt.

09:30 Perry Goes Down

Perry circled but picked up the torpedo meant for the Oberon. It was sunk.

10:00 Oberon Sunk

Our follow up torpedoes chased down the Oberon and sank it.

11:15 Oiler met its end

Our next salvo of 65-76 chased down the oiler and sank it. We dodged the final torpedoes from Perry and disengaged.

GLAVCOM was happy, but also handed us a new mission.

Priority Mission: Barrier patrol around Bergen to block enemy subs landing commando teams.

13:00 Barrier Patrol

09-OCT-1984 1900L Just West of Bergen

We setup just west of Bergen and waited.

Soon we have our first customer...

09-OCT-1984 2300L Just West of Bergen

We found a sub to our southeast, further inshore (it had snuck around us?!) and it turned out to be a NATO Permit-class. We turned to the east even as it fired a Mk48 at us. We immediately replied with Vjuga-65 and a TEST-71M plus a decoy, then turned north to evade.

The Vjuga-65 was right on target, and wounded the Permit. The follow-on TEST-71M finished her off.

But that wasn't our target.

20:05 Surrounded

11-OCT-1984 1700L same location

A subsurface contact approached us, even as more subsurface contacts appeared to north and south of us.

Sonar found multiple contacts to our south, southwest, and west. And one of them was a Los Angeles class. With us limited to 10 kt, the odds are against us.

We finally got a range for the 688, just over 10 km away. We fired off a Vjuga-65... 2 left. She had to turn north to evade. We fired a second one... this one was close enough to seek her. We launched TEST-71 to herd her away from us, and a decoy for her counterfired torpedo. She went down after being hit twice.

That was our priority target, and GLAVCOM was pleased. It tried to order us to go hunt for a convoy heading for Portsmouth, but we decided to go back for some repairs.

We dodged multiple subsurface contacts, and headed for Murmansk.

29:07 Return

12-OCT-1984 2000L Murmansk

The port crew treated my crew like celebrities, and fellow officers in the officer's mess were eager to hear my successful tactics against the Yankee subs. We needed about 22 hours just to repair the propulsion anyway. XO had the matter well in hand along with Chief Engineer.

GLACOM did assess us a prestige penalty for not going after the convoy they ordered.

(PLAY NOTE: Our prestige after this mission is 690. I'm saving for 850 to make sure I can transfer to an Akula class, which has double the torpedo load and improved sonar, quieting, and more.)

And thus ended the 16th war patrol of Kapitan Changov. The adventure will continue in the next episode!

This will be my third attempt at the Soviet campaign. The year is 1984. After too many Yankee provocations, the Soviet Union had enough and declared war. The Soviet Army can take Europe, if the Soviet Navy can stop or at least slow the reinforcements reaching continental Europe from the US. And as a captain of a Soviet submarine, I will do my duty to the Motherland.
