2I had not played this since it came out in 2000, and it has aged magnificently. Designed as a love-letter to all previous 8 Final Fantasy games, this game really featured what made me fall for the series to begin with.
Moguri Mod itself was designed to unofficially remaster Final Fantasy 9, and is staggering in its quality! The pre-rendered backgrounds all look as if they were made by modern teams, and all FMVs were interpolated to run at 30FPS instead of 15!
The thumb here, and this scene has such a massive nostalgia hit for me.
I always think of this scene first when I think of FF9. It felt like the opening of South Gate was a allegory for opening the door to a huge adventure. It was also right when I started college, and had way less time for gaming.
9 to me feels like a game that was saying goodbye to my childhood, and since it was Sakaguchi's last its poetic.
