Review: 3/5

No way would I have ever thought "Dark Souls but guns" would be enough for a fun game, but here we are. Remnant: From the Ashes is one of the most unique soulslikes, and I think really demonstrates the principle that you need your own individuality and heart in a game to make it iconic, even if you're building off of the core of a well-established and loved series. There's room for innovation in the world of soulslikes, and I think Remnant has it in spades.

Let's talk gameplay- it's a third-person shooter, you've got a primary and secondary weapon you can equip, there's a dodge roll, and plenty of gear/armor slots and set bonuses to fully perfect your build. You can build strong into melee, and forgo using guns most of the time, you can run-and-gun with a myriad of automatic weapons, or you can play slow and collected with rifles or semi-automatics, and there are a decent amount of perks and armor pieces to support your choices. Each new drop had me thinking of what build I could effectively run it in.

Unfortunately the actual control of your character often feels clunky. It takes a large amount of time to use consumables like your healing item, the Dragon Heart, which really only felt safe to use once I was out of combat anyways. In combat, the safer option was typically to use my weapon mod, an AOE heal, which also helped my teammate. Neither of us upgraded the amount of heart charges we had, and I really don't think we suffered for it.

The coolest thing Remnant has is procedural generation. Some of the maps are created on the fly, so even in new playthroughs and NG+, I felt like I was traversing new areas, albeit with familiar enemies and aesthetics. It's really cool to have a feature like that that works. Also, most zones had multiple end bosses that were randomly chosen, so I could play through the entire game and not fight several bosses that my friend did who also completed the game. Stuff like this makes it so players want to complete your game multiple times so they don't miss out on an awesome fight or weapon that they haven't gotten yet.

One other thing this game did great, (in my opinion a no-brainer that I wish the Souls series would adopt as well), is the multiplayer system. It's simply based on joining the host's game and then if you die, rather than getting booted to your own world, you just spectate the other player until they die or reach a bonfire, (I don't remember what they're called in this game, but let's be real- they're all bonfires). It was a breath of fresh air to be able to play the game together without trying to coordinate passwords or find out where a summon sign was put down. That said, I think it's a little archaic that one player cannot initiate travel without the other player immediately nearby.

On a list of good soulslikes, I think this one makes the cut, but not necessarily near the top. There are a ton of cool, fresh ideas in here that are great conceptually, but could use some refinement in practice. Honestly, more than anything it has me excited for a sequel; here's to hoping Gunfire is able to refine what From the Ashes brought to the table and truly knock it out of the park with Remnant 2!
