Review: 4/5
Titanfall was an innovative multiplayer shooter that shook up the FPS formula by adding a grappling hook, wallrunning, tons of vertical map design, and the ultimate ability of summoning a massive Titan from the sky, equipped with a custom loadout full of equally colossal weaponry to raze the battlefield. (Call of Duty ♥♥♥♥ itself upon release, and thus, Advanced Warfare was born as well). When Titanfall 2 released, it tightened up the serie's already-impressive handling, added new abilities and weapons for both the Pilots and the Titans and, oh yeah, threw in a whole standalone campaign this time for the noobs who suck too bad to play multiplayer, (which, by the way, thanks for that, Respawn!)
Titanfall 2 is visually incredible; from the warring military faction designs to the mechanical wonders known as Titans, there is an awesome level of detail brought to life by expert texture and model work. The game released in 2016, which is not a small amount of time ago, and even so, manages to stand out graphically against games released today. I imagine this was somewhat made possible by being an EA-published title, but this by no means diminishes the impressiveness of the feat.
My absolute favorite part of Titanfall 2 was the weaponry. Between the Pilot's and Titan's loadouts, sidearms, and explosives, I'd bet Titanfall 2 features over 2 dozen different weapons and they all managed to leave an impression with me. In the FPS games I was used to playing, I'd come across one of however many assault rifles, but instead of seeing the words, "M16, Scar, AK47, etc.", it may as well have just said, "Generic Assault Rifle X". I was used to thinking an assault rifle is an assault rifle is an assault rifle, and so on for other weapon types. However, in Titanfall 2, each weapon handled differently enough for me to form opinions on different weapons in the same category, and it made looking for guns/ammo throughout a level actually feel rewarding.
The biggest failing of Titanfall 2 was the story, in my opinion. I didn't think it was altogether bad, but I would say it was a bit rushed, and didn't really give me time to connect with any of the characters. I enjoyed BT for most of the game, but the banter between him and Jack, (the protagonist), fell flat for me a lot of the time and felt somewhat cliché, like I was listening to some mid buddy-cop movie or something. This detriment by no means ruined the game for me, though! I ended up viewing the campaign of Titanfall 2 as somewhat of a playground: there were brilliant set pieces that always gave me something to look at, the movement and combat was so fluid and made it easy to tackle combat from any angle I wanted, so there was never really a chance for me to get bored.
From a solely single-player point of view, I think Titanfall 2 was a lot of fun, however short. I think its main purpose is to showcase all of the new features, weapons, Titans, etc. in order to steer you towards the multiplayer aspect. Unfortunately, the two times I've attempted to get into it, I was kicked shortly after and it didn't allow me to remain in games, so I can't recommend it at the moment if you're looking for a multiplayer shooter. I do think the single-player mode is worth playing though, doubly so if you're the kind of person to want to try higher difficulties or hunting collectibles.
