*Disclaimer* I am trait level 1000, so I do have the DLC traits active. While this will cause me to do more damage and be more efficient, these are still the most optimal ways to build without the DLC and are still extremely powerful.
No DLC, hardcore or survival items needed for this build! The best part is, you can make the majority of this build in the 1st two worlds!

Hunter set
Repeater pistol - Hunters Mark
Hunting Rifle - Hot Shot
Butcher's Flail
Talisman of animosity
Hunters band
Pillar of stone
Build Summary:
A solid build using only the most basic of gear. This weakspot build can carry you to end game or until you find more powerful gear. The Hunters set gives a nice 20% increase in ranged damage AND weakspot damage. Combo that with the talisman of animosity and you will be doing some serious weakspot damage. Hunters band further increases our ranged damage by 10% and again, if we hit a weakpoint, it adds 20% to our damage. Pillar of stone is there to help keep us accurate with our shots and that smooth strafing speed you get while aiming. Hunters mark increases our crit chance which raises our overall DPS. The trick to this build is accuracy. Aim for the weakspots and you should have no problem taking down strong enemies.
**note some enemies do not have weakpoints in that case, gunslinger's charm would be a great replacement against those enemies as well as burden of the gambler**
