Renegade is a scrolling beat em up that was originally released for the arcades by Technos in 1986. It was then ported to a bunch of computers such as the Atari ST, Amiga, C64 Spectrum to name but a few. In 1987 Taito released a NES version which was a little bit different to the arcade original with stages taking place on multiple backdrops instead of just the one and little cool things like the motorcycle battle in stage 2 and the maze like stage 4 offering some new and original concepts for the genre. The reason why I am mentioning this is because when Natsume ported the game in 1993 to the Master System, Taito’s NES version was the build that they used.

Essentially it’s a nicer looking version of the NES version with some colourful graphics and a far bit of detail on the sprites. There is quite a bit of glitching and you will notice how often they repeat the same character designs over and over again. But I did like the variety in the levels and the little touches to the backgrounds such as the panicking bartender in stage 3 or the moving lights out of the windows giving the simple impression that the train is moving.
Although the game does technically have a 2 player mode, but it is not simultaneous and you’ll have to take turns. It is partly why I should have bought Double Dragon back in the day as I think is the only Master System scrolling beat em up with such a feature (or at least I haven’t found another).

Control wise button 1 is used to hit enemies to the left and button 2 hits enemies to the right. Your character turns around based on enemy placement so you’ll need to be careful as to whether you are preforming a kick behind or a punch. The jump attacks are a little awkward as it requires both buttons to be pressed, but overall it is serviceable once you get used to it.

There’s only four levels in the game and whilst there is a fair bit of variety to the backdrops, the enemies tend to repeat an awful lot and its arguable whether the non-boss baddies are simply just sprite replacements for each other as their attack patterns never seem to change. It’s also worth mentioning that the game has probably one of the cheapest end bosses found on the system. Whilst doing this playthrough and therefore playing it for the first time in probably ten years, I didn’t realise that end boss had an instant death move – yes if he shoots you with his gun you will instantly die. It feels a little cheap to die from one hit after defeating an entire army of thugs on the way there.

But anyway Renegade isn’t that bad. There are better beat em ups on the Sega Master System such as the aforementioned Double Dragon or Streets of Rage or Golden Axe, but overall it’s a solid conversion.
