Sonic Lost World was originally a Wii U exclusive in 2013 during Nintendo’s three game exclusive deal with Sega. Now I don’t own a Wii U so naturally I was a little bit annoyed about this, but Sega seem to like the digital distribution nature of the PC market these days and decided to port the game to Windows in late 2015.

The game is a 3D platformer where you control Sonic as you try to get to the end of the level. There are four acts in each stage with two bosses in each stage. The main gimmick here is that the game has the same cylinder style levels as used in Mario Galaxy, with Sonic able to run right around a sphere. Ultimately it comes across as a better developed concept of the fail Sega Saturn game ‘Sonic Xtreme’, which was going to use a fisheye lens and rotating levels. Overall there is a great deal of variety in the levels with it switching constantly between the side scrolling 2D and 3D mechanics.

The game plays a little differently to other Sonic games, not necessarily for the better. For one Sonic now has a run button, I didn’t realise that this existed until about the second or third level – I thought that Sonic was just slower. I’m not sure why this is necessary, ever since the invention of the analogue stick this should no longer be a thing, but Sega unnecessarily put this in. Sonic also has both a jump and kick move of which certain bosses and enemies require you to use one or the other – which confused the heck out of me until I realised that there was a difference between the two. The last thing that I would mention is that when the game moves to a 2D perspective Sonic doesn’t seem to jump as far anymore. If you compare this to Sonic Generations then he tends to lose horizontal speed very quickly whilst jump meaning that you can often misjudge a gap which you thought you could reach.

The wisps do make a return offering Sonic a bunch of special powers, however it seems that they have been forced in at the last minute. They seem rather circumstantial at times and I would have preferred them to just not be here. Overall the mechanics are different to the earlier game, but they do work once you get far into the game, it’s just seems like Sega have overcomplicated the controls for their own good.

Overall Sonic Lost World is not a bad game and it’s nowhere as near as bad as some of the Sonic games being churned out recently (see Sonic 06 or Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric). I has a few problems sure and I didn’t enjoy it as much as Sonic Generations, but it does have some colourful visuals, some cool music and some interesting level designs which make it an interesting spin-off game in the Sonic universe that’s well worth a spin.
This particular video is just me playing through two of the special unlockable levels, if you collect all of the red stars in a level then these appear. Following this I will be uploading a full walkthrough of the seven zones in the game, the special zone at the end and the bit of DLC that is free with the PC, so feel free to look out for those videos.
