Resident Evil 0 is a survival horror game developed and published by Capcom. It was originally released for the Nintendo GameCube in 2002 and serves as a prequel to the original Resident Evil game, which first debuted in 1996.
Plot Summary
The game is set in July 1998, just before the events of the first Resident Evil. It follows two protagonists:
Rebecca Chambers: A young officer of the Special Tactics and Rescue Service (S.T.A.R.S.) Bravo Team.
Billy Coen: A former Marine and convicted criminal who was being transported to his execution before his transport was attacked.
The story begins with Rebecca and her team being sent to investigate a series of grisly murders in the Arklay Mountains, near Raccoon City. After the team's helicopter crashes, Rebecca stumbles upon an abandoned train, where she meets Billy. The two form an uneasy alliance to survive the horrors they encounter, including mutated creatures and zombies.
Throughout the game, Rebecca and Billy uncover the dark secrets of the Umbrella Corporation, the pharmaceutical company responsible for the development of the T-virus, a biological weapon that turns living organisms into monsters. They also discover the origins of the virus and how it was first spread.
Gameplay
Resident Evil 0 retains the classic survival horror gameplay elements of the series, such as fixed camera angles, inventory management, and puzzle-solving. The game introduces a "partner zapping" system, allowing players to switch between Rebecca and Billy at will. Each character has unique abilities:
Rebecca: Can mix herbs and chemicals, but has less health.
Billy: Has more health, can move heavy objects, but cannot mix herbs.
Players must use the strengths of each character to overcome obstacles and defeat enemies.
Critical Reception
Upon its release, Resident Evil 0 was praised for its graphics, atmosphere, and the new gameplay mechanics it introduced. However, some critics noted that the fixed camera angles and tank controls felt dated. Legacy
