Resident Evil 2 Remake One Shot Demo (Played By a Veteran of the Original)
First let me make something clear!
I am not an expert at survival horror games. I titled this video that it is being played by a veteran of the original because I played the original releases on both the N64 and the Sony PlayStation back in the 90s. I have also recently streamed the original PlayStation versions of both Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 Nemesis and I am currently working on Dinocrisis.
I thought it would be interesting to record my reaction the Resident Evil 2 Remake because of how recently I played the Original and how much I remember from it.
I enjoy survival horror games but typically play through them once and do not pick them up again. I also do not strive to get the best endings or find every Easter Egg and secret. I just play to enjoy them.
I found it fascinating and very tasteful how Capcom used so meny iconic familiar assets from the original Resident Evil 2 on the ps1. It left me with a nauseating sense of familiarity and unfamiliarity at the same time. It was almost like an extended 30 minute Dejavu trip.
The Raccoon City Precincts main entrance hall was modeled closely to the original RE2s main hall but with a few added nuances as well as staircases up to the second floor. I noticed that the original ladder was no longer present. The library with the bookshelf puzzle still exists as well as the section of collapsible floor.
The soda machines as well as a good portion of hallway remains unchanged on the east wing. I dont know why but those soda machines made me feel safe like I knew my way around which I clearly didn't. The section of western hallway that you normally encounter your first licker via a huge jump scare appears to no longer contain a licker but I wonder if that will be changed at full release?
The african american cop whom I forget his name also meets Leon in a different place from the original RE2 psx version and also gives Leon a knife.
The controls appear to be highly reminiscent of RE4 on the Nintendo GameCube, this is one thing I am not a fan of. I loved the old tank controls!
Combat feels a bit off due to head shots not being one hit kills and some zombies appear to require several head shots to go down.
Another odd mechanic is that should you attempt to open a locked door you are quickly thrown into your menu without any type of prompt or dialogue. Another odd menu quirk is that when you pick up an item you are required to select the slot in your inventory that you wish to place it. I dont remember if this was a feature of the original but it definitely feels to slow the game down a break immersion. I dont really understand why capcom chose to do this because its irrelevant which slot items go in.
Despite those few negative remarks this game is going to be amazing and if your a fan of the series and/or horror games in general it is definetly worth your buy. Hats off to capcom for rendering the RPD so closely to the original and tastefully adding in new elements.
However, if your a fan of the older title and your like me and you hate change expect some retcons for sure.
