15Resident Evil 4 is a hugely popular and influential survival horror/third person shooter game, first released on the 11th of January, 2005. It was developed by Capcom Production Studio 4, and published by Capcom - as an exclusive for the Nintendo GameCube.
However, it was soon ported to the Sony Playstation 2 - along with a considerable amount of extra content. It has since been ported to many, many different platforms - even being set to receive a full-blown remake, in 2023. The version played through here is the Xbox One re-release, played via backwards compatibility on the Xbox Series X.
You control Leon S. Kennedy, one of two characters from 1998's Resident Evil 2. In the years since that game, he has transitioned from a rookie cop - to a U.S. government special agent.
The U.S. President's daughter (Ashley Graham) has been kidnapped by a mysterious cult, located somewhere in rural Spain. You (Leon) have been sent on a mission to rescue Ashley. However, the mission is far more complicated and difficult than expected, and Leon must fend off angry mobs of crazed villagers, deadly traps, as well as monstrous creatures.
Though released in 2005, development began as far back as 1999. This is because many previous versions were cancelled - one of which would even become the first Devil May Cry game. Some developers thought the games weren't changing enough, and wanted Resident Evil 4 to take a more action-packed approach. Conversely, other developers were not as keen on the new direction.
The resulting game is one that is very recognisable as Resident Evil - keeping many staples of the series - yet also a fairly significant change in direction. Many new elements of the game would have a strong and lasting influence on other videogames in general, such as the over-the-shoulder camera. The game was very popular, although (particularly in later years) there was some criticism of the series being taken away from its roots.
