Resident Evil 4, the horror game that not only changed Resident Evil, but every 3rd person shooter. Survival Horror replaced by Horror Action, a choice felt in the franchise till this day. One that has split the Resident Evil community in half.
However, despite all that; Resident Evil 4 was and is one of the greatest video games of all time. This long, but powerfully entertaining masterpiece never loses it's muster, even during the low points it remains above most other video games of its kind.
While Resident Evil as we know it died with Resi 4's release, this game gave us a lifetime of memories, memes, jokes and a strong, lonely sense of understanding that Resident Evil 4 is simply lightning in a bottle. One that won't ever be matched or improved upon. To a point where no other game has come close.
Resident Evil 4 is not only fantastic in it's gameplay, but its story too! It's bad, but good-bad. While I totally have massive issues with it due to my own opinion on how the Resident Evil lore and universe should feel, i'd be wrong to say this is a game that doesn't have a host of interesting characters and events.
Wonder little creepy monster men, beautiful Asian mystery women, bratty rich blondes and dangerous sunglasses loving figures monitoring the situation from the shadows. RE4's cast is a list of names you'll never forget. Not to mention our shop keeper friend.
Resident Evil 4 not only has a long story mode casually lasting over 10 hours a playthrough, but it has even more to offer. A canon side story unlocked once the game is completed. A non-canon gamemode that while short, is a nice little snack of gameplay, and the best feature introduced to Resident Evil; The Mercenaries Mode! Yes, Mercs was in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, but it was here that it was revamped into the addicting mini game it is known for today. 5 characters, 4 stages, one goal: survive with a high score! You'll spend just as many hours if not more playing Mercs over the game story. It's that good.
