Capcom's Resident Evil has gone through many changes. From PS1's fixed camera angles with 2D backgrounds, to over the shoulder 3D horror action. Now, we enter the world of first person horror. A change many people. including myself aren't fond of, with the new gameplay style being the sole reason I put off playing the new entry in my favourite franchise for so long.

However, now having played Resident Evil 7, I can say that this is the closest to classic Resident Evil that we've seen in years. RE7 feels closer to 1996's original Resident Evil than anything has since RE Zero. It's been a long time coming, but the series finally returned to its gaming roots. That alone makes Resi 7 one of the better games in the series to have released in the last 15 years.
Sure, it's not as exciting as Resident Evil 5, or addictive either. But this game was a welcome experience, with one of the best stories in the series to date, minus the hand waving of a characters direct actions that make them a real scumbag.
Thanks for choosing my walkthrough to watch over all the other RE7 videos. Resident Evil is one of the best franchises in gaming, and despite my constant complaining about the series direction, I am always excited to see what comes next for Resident Evil. These playthroughs are some of my favourite to make, because I am always overcome with pure joy.
Returning in Resident Evil 7 is the use of puzzles, locked doors, maze-like locations, and a focus on avoiding conflict over going guns and glory towards the Sun that became standard in Capcom's series. Now we make our way around a scary house filled with monsters and a weird family looking to smash my skull at every turn. Exploring the house and the surrounding locations is a joy, and RE7's use of darkness, shadow, and colour make this world feel far more alive than the series has in awhile. I had a great time in the Baker families home.
Not perfect, however. Resident Evil 7 has some big flaws that impacted the fun for myself, and they seem to be common complaints. The first issue is the Mold enemy. They go from creepy to bland very quickly. Losing any fear they had, which wasn't a lot. Their design is also terrible, with no real noticeable difference between them, making this enemy easily my number one pick for worst standard enemy in the Resident Evil series of all time. And when you beat Resident Evil: Code Veronica's moths as worse enemy, you know you suck.
The other major flaw; the locations beyond the first aren't very interesting. They blend together in my mind and don't do a great job at making me want to explore. Due to this, I miss a few weapons and items that are optional.
Besides that, the game is pretty great. The sound effects, music, and atmosphere are wonderful, and far better than it's sequel; Resident Evil 8: Village.
No, Resident Evil 7 isn't perfect, and I for sure want 3rd Person games back, but this entry in the Capcom horror series is a classic. It's the first true survival horror game since possibly the Outbreak series, or Resident Evil Zero, being the last RE release that focused on avoiding combat, and using puzzles as the means to advancement. RE7 also brought forth Resident Evil REmake 2, another true survival horror game in the franchise, and possibly the best direction the series could take for me from here on out. It's a shame that direction was instantly thrown out in favour of more action with REmake 3 and RE8. Currently, I believe REmake 2 was a snowflake in Hell. Extremely rare, & burned out of existence immediately.
Resident Evil 7 introduces the characters of Ethan Winters, Mia Winters, Jack Baker, and his family. All these new characters got a big response one way or another from the fan bases. Ethan Winters is commonly seen as bland and annoying, though I personally like the character and feel his story act was rather interesting. Hella stupid... but interesting. And I look forward to what Capcom offer with this storyline in the future. Then there's Mia. One of the worst characters in the series. Whenever I hear people complain about Resident Evil 4's Ashley, I refer them to Mia Winters instead as the true pain. She single handedly brings down RE7's story and makes the game worse. Boo to her and her fans.
Then we have Jack Baker and his family. A wonderful cast of characters that make RE7 a grand adventure. Jack is a scary man, with a sad past. If only there was a way to give him and his loved ones a happy ending. But life is never fair. Jack may be the best main enemy since Nemesis. With a lot more personality too. A perfect single game character.
