Respawnables - The Last Respawn (~Final~ event, read description)
(Apologies for the end screen being a little empty. Due to this video being of an "unsupported aspect ratio", they wouldn't let me add in video links at the very end...So, I put in card links instead)
Well, this is it then. Digital Legends is pulling the plug on their flagship game, The Respawnables. Initially, it was announced that they would do a few final events (this one "The Last Respawn", being the *very* last straw), pull the game from digital app stores on December 21st, 2021 (already passed, making it impossible to download the game legitimately) and ultimately discontinue multiplayer services on January 13, 2022, at 2:00pm UCT.
Originally launched in 2012, Respawnables set itself apart from other shooters by not having any story, plot or any serious elements. Instead, DL decided to drop a bunch of "immortal" mercenaries in an endless series of pointless battles, with some schadenfreude-style humor added for good measure, for our amusement. It worked so well, a spiritual successor in the form of "Afterpulse" was released in 2015, and later, a proper sequel "Respawnables Heroes" in 2020.
As much as I hate to see this game go, it can't quite hold a candle in the oversaturated market of mobile games today, especially those in the Battle Royale genre. Maybe they will release an HD version for modern day consoles with revived servers, quality-of-life changes, or maybe even new content! But until then... Thanks DL for such an awesome game. 'Till we meet again in Sandtown, keep respawning everyone!
