I respond to alloy 7 gamer life on style vs substance and say he's both right and wrong. Depends on the game, and the narrative. It's a double edge sword in my opinion when done right like in AC2 and Tales of Vesperia it helps us get into the stories and follow the characters. When done badly like AC Unity and Tales of Symphonia dawn of the new world it puts a barrier up that makes the game more tedious and less enjoyable.
