1,039Welcome to Dean of Doom, the show where we give grades to classic and contemporary Doom wads. Why? Because ranking things is fun. Today’s episode will be dedicated to Resurgence, a megawad released in 2014 by Josh Sealy, better known to the Doom Community as Joshy. It expands on themes that Joshy explored in Surge, a partial megawad released two years prior, and emulates Scythe, Plutonia, and Speed of Doom. Its tongue-in-cheek story text, in-game sendups of Joshy and Darkwave’s 2009 masterpiece, and the return of the Incomparable Stuart Rynn led Resurgence to be considered Speed of Doom’s spiritual sequel despite containing 95% less Darkwave0000. Don’t worry, though, he does make a cameo. Having led the Plutonia Revisited Community Project and contributed to high-profile releases like Community Chest 4 and Back to Saturn X Episode 2, the time was right for Joshy’s solo career to take off. Resurgence is the work of a mature artist, and it’s a shame that Joshy has only released four maps since setting this behemoth on the world. Today I’m here to prove that Joshy didn’t just escape Darkwave’s shadow with Resurgence, he scaled Doom mapping’s Mount Olympus, and took his rightful place with the gods.
