Welcome to Dean of Doom, the show where we give grades to classic and contemporary Doom wads. Why? Because ranking things is fun. Today’s episode will be dedicated to Epic 2, a megawad released in 2010 by Alexander S, aka Eternal, and the sequel to 2007’s Cacoward-winning Epic. After three prolific and celebrated years in the Doom community, Eternal released his most ambitious work yet, joining the elite, yet elusive, one-man megawad club. Eternal elected to work under vanilla constraints: quite the concession for a Boom enthusiast, but one that reduced the number of lines he had to draw, and sparked some creative workarounds that wowed players in its day. Epic 2 is less a sequel than Epic 1 is a prologue; context clues suggest that the two wads might not even have the same protagonist. Of course, the expositional details are less important than the experience. If you’ve played Hell Ground, then you’re already familiar with Eternal’s mastery of unspoken storytelling, but that was an art-house short film compared to the blockbuster feature that is Epic 2, so get some popcorn and settle in.
