They were known as BRIXMIS - a British Army unit made up of personnel spying on the Soviet Union in post-war Germany. After the Second World War, Germany was split into four occupation zones. The east came under Russian control, while the west went under American, British and French control. Part of the agreement to divide Germany led to the creation of military liaison missions, that could travel into enemy territory. However, in reality, BRIXMIS (the British Commander-in-Chief’s Mission to the Soviet Forces) became spies.
In this episode former BRIXMIS NCO Dave Butler and former SERB Officer Sergei Savchenko, who were spies on different sides of the Iron Curtain, meet again in Germany and share thoughts and memories while walking on the famous Bridge of Spies and discuss how two famous deaths could have been the result of inexperienced Soviet troops.
