Retro and Reminisce // Aliens Eradication: A FINE Example of what DooM Mods can do!!
And today we have ANOTHER perfect example of what happens when talented Modders work within the confines of a fantastic, Open Source Engine.
While Aliens: Eradication isn't without it's few glaring flaws, it proves the point that atmosphere matters in what you play. What struck me the most while streaming Eradication was how it made me feel as if I was actually on LV-426, closely checking corners while carefully paying attention to my Motion Tracker. Furthermore, Levels outside of iconic Locations feel like they could have been deleted scenes from, say, Alien 3. Of course, I'm speaking as a fan here.
But if you strip away my obvious fanboyism, you'll clearly see a distinct level of care with all of the intricate details that are presented. Even crazier is that Eradication's level of geometry was done using a modified variant of DooM's Engine, and that's what I appreciate the most: As with Warhammer Boltgun, you can clearly see that the Modders involved really, REALLY cared about and loved the source material. Down to the Sprites taken directly from Alien Trilogy, Sounds lifted directly from the Films (THAT Door Sound from Aliens... you know what I mean) and once again, an atmosphere that is genuinely accurate to the films. Factor in a Class Selection System (I **HAD** to go with the iconic Alien 3 Weylland Yutani Soldier) that feature their own Objectives and you're clearly playing something super special.
Seriously. This Mod here is far superior to a majority of recent "AAA" releases. Redfall, anyone??
However, and as with Boltgun, lack of Enemy variety lightly sours the experience while being totally understandable considering our source material here. Aliens move a little too quickly, and Human style Enemies kinda plod along. But the worst culprit?? Oddly placed Voice Lines. That repeat. And repeat. And repeat. And repeat. And repeat some more. Followed by a little more repeating. It's atmosphere shattering on a criminal level; you'll be carefully traversing through a newly revealed duct in near pitch darkness, paying close attention to the ambience and suddenly "I'LL GET YOUH" (It actually does sound like that) loops in your ears until you dispatch the one talking. And while I'll admit that I eventually used DooM's Cheat System (which removed me from that incredible Atmosphere) Stages seem to drag on due to their intricate, labyrinthine design that's compounded with that aforementioned Objective System.
Even with those issues, Aliens Eradication is truly one of the best Mods I've experienced in a long while and goes to show you the importance of a solid foundation. GZDooM is an incredible Open Source Engine that when placed in the right hands, mind-blowing Mods are a result. If I had to score Eradication here, I'd give it a solid 8. Even if Enemies repeat themselves. Repeat themselves. Repeat themselves. Repeat themselves. Repeat themselves...
I'LL GET YOUH!!
