Retro and Reminisce // Revisiting the forgotten and BRILLIANT 'PlayStation Iteration' of DooM
If you're a fan of DooM even in the slightest, I take it you're familiar with the one-off, PlayStation Iteration of Id's masterclass in First Person Shooting. Quickly summarizing for context, Id Software commissioned Williams Entertainment to port DooM to the then new PSX Hardware utilizing the Jaguar Iteration as a base. While the Jaguar Iteration lacked a few geometry details in Stages along with some smaller subtleties, it's all about PlayStation's Lighting, Graphical and Sound capabilities which are clearly noticeable the second you start playing.
Aubrey Hodges Soundtrack immediately immerses you in a way that the iconic Original cannot, and extra lighting flourishes due to customized bloom lighting add in an extra level of detail. Also, Weapons were slightly reworked and feel as if they hit harder. Lastly, all Enemies and their respective Effects were reworked, making them sound far more imposing than the original.
And that's where GZDooM comes in. Remember, the PlayStation Iteration was a rework specific to the strengths of Sony's then new Hardware. PSXDooM takes all of those extra flourishes and injects them into GZDooM's Engine, further improving this legendary experience. Lighting is actually improved and expanded upon along with some brilliant Sound implementations; we now have footsteps not only from Enemies, but from actual terrain you're moving across. Even Weapons have details like extra kick as well as Shell Casings that react to your environment.
And don't get me started on all of the subtle Blood Effects...
This is by far the best way to enjoy DooM and I cannot stress the fact that if you haven't played DooM through GZDooM, or if you haven't experienced PlayStation's stellar offering, you **REALLY** need to give this a shot.
This is easily going to be the default way I enjoy DooM going forward, even with the recent (at the timme of typing this) and incredible Voxel Mod, or Brutal DooM and it's sheer brilliance.
