Was the decision to go back to the beginning of Bonk really using our heads, or just a big headache?


The PC Engine was originally designed as a Famicom successor according to a quote in this article about the failure of the TG-16:

However, an executive at Hudson states, admitting it's merely something he heard, that Hudson had asked Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi for his blessing to release their own system in this 2003 interview:

There's no mention of pitching it to Nintendo as their next system. Further, a 1987 interview (also present at the previous link) doesn't mention talking to Nintendo at all, despite discussing whether the PC Engine would compete with the Famicom.

So, while the PC Engine was definitely designed to be a more powerful system for programmers that had hit the limits of the Famicom, it's possible that the idea that it was pitched as a Famicom successor may have been a rumor that grew in the telling.
