Initially released for the Famicom Disk System in 1987, The Adventure of Link served as the only direct sequel to the original Legend of Zelda, and the last game in the series split timelines, until the release of Breath of the Wild in 2017, and Tears of the Kingdom in 2023.
Developed by Nintendo’s R&D4, including series co-creators Shigeru Miyamoto as producer, and Takashi Tezuka, who is credited as story and script writer.
Because it was first released as a Famicom Disk System game, the worldwide cartridge release was delayed until September 1988 due to the 1988 ROM chip shortage that also delayed the release of Super Mario Bros 2.
Although it is often seen as the black sheep of the Zelda series, Zelda 2 introduced many things that would become staples in later games including the magic meter, The Triforce of Courage, and Dark Link, as well as many of the game’s locations being reused as NPC names in later games.
