In Japan rückte Nintendo erst 1991 mit einer 16-Bit-Maschine nach. Inzwischen hatte Sega breits weltweit das Mega Drive veröffentlicht. Die Chance zur Marktübernahme standen gut. Was Sega aber noch fehlte, war ein neuer Vorzeigeheld, denn das einstige Maskottchen "Alex Kidd" hatte seine besten Tage bereits gesehen. Sonic the Hedgehog sollte nicht nur in seine Fußstapfen treten, sondern auch beweisen, wieviel Power unter der Haube des Mega Drives steckte.
