This video is meant to act as a review of Return of Them, Don't Starve Together's recent update chain, in it's entirety. A retrospective, if you will. I talk about all content from the update chain, including that which I missed, in an informative and (hopefully) entertaining way.

So. Return of them is a thing. Or rather, was a thing.
Klei’s ‘update chain,’ as it’s been dubbed, aimed to introduce a new area to the game full of new monsters, objects, items, and diverse biomes.
Turn of tides was the first update in Return of them. Comparatively, it didn’t really add much content-wise, but the point of it was to pave the way for all or most future updates in RoT by adding a completely new ocean area, replacing the iconic stage-prop waves. It also added a then-barebones boating system, replete with steering wheels, anchors, sails, and some new sailing mechanics using these new items. At the time, the ocean was extremely empty, not containing much save for some rocks. Which is definitely, absolutely, certainly, absolutely not still the case today.
Aside from the ocean and the basic boating mechanics, there was also a mysterious coastal formation that you could run into – the lunar island. This new location contained a small number of biomes, which, much like the ocean, contain plenty of rocks, but also things other than rocks, such as some fancy ‘tainted’ versions of existing mobs – the gory Pengull, the stalwart crystal spiders, and the abhorrent horror hounds. The designs of these three creatures were pretty cool; it was definitely interesting to see some grim takes on some of our favourite Don’t Starve denizens.
Crab King is the epitome of missed opportunities. For starters, I absolutely adore it’s visual design. And no, I’m not just saying that to dilute my upcoming arguments so I don’t sound like a negative Nancy – I mean it. There is a lot of symbolism surrounding the boss’ design – for one, you can clearly see that his posture is impacted by the colossal crown atop his head, as it weighs down upon him. Almost like the deal with the moon he made may similarly weigh upon his conscience, as it is ultimately what drove him and Pearl apart.
It’s honestly a shame that the boss doesn’t speak during the fight, perhaps to beg for forgiveness or imply that he’s been taken over by his benefactors. I know that the Crab King isn’t exactly as final as the Fuelweaver, the only other boss in the game that speaks, but still, it might have been nice to hear some of the other side of the story.
And, the gameplay. Well, I needn’t go over this, to be honest. Need to save my mental energy at this point. But in short, Crab King is a spammy bastard who requires an incredibly specific strategy to defeat, otherwise you are practically doomed. The basic concept is interesting though, inserting gems to your liking to sort of control how the boss fight will pan out but – it doesn’t help that the gems’ effects are either mostly forgettable, or, contrastingly, able to incur several Armageddons worth upon everything that you know and love. Even while in a group, fighting this boss is a genuine headache, which definitely says something considering the difficulty level of most other bosses in this game with multiple people.

🖒Like if you liked the video, that's why it's called a like🖒
