The Harry Potter movies wouldn’t be nearly as magical without all the incredible and other worldly creatures we encounter in the films. Whether they were built from scratch and made to function on set, models built to scan for CGI, fully digital creations or a combo of all three - these creatures managed to bring the magic to every film.
Walking onto the set of Harry Potter was like walking into complete magic - a person could see built and functioning Hippogriffs and dragons! While many of the creatures were either digitally enhanced or fully created by CGI, the actors still had loads of practically built props and creatures to work with.
While Daniel Radcliffe didn’t REALLY get to ride a Hippogriff, he did get to pet one with individually painted and attached feathers, making it seem extremely realistic. Radcliffe did face a fire-breathing Hungarian Horntail dragon - a giant dragon was built and put in a cage, equipped with a flamethrower hidden in its mouth to really bring the magic! Dementors were completely CGI but the road to creating them was an extensive one that involved working with puppeteers and giant Dementor puppets underwater.
Unfortunately, the actors didn’t really get to interact with Dobby or Kreacher as they were only added into the film during the editing process, but models including all the details were made! As for the troll from the first film - it was both CGI and a life-sized model for the actors to perform with.
No matter how they did it, the Harry Potter team pulled of incredible magic.
